| Jaisalmer was once a very prosperous city since it was on important trade and transportation routes. Since the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan, its importance as a commercial center has diminished. At its peak, there were many wealthy business people that built imposing buildings of sandstone with very decorative works in the sandstone. Some of these buildings are still around, frequently having been divided into smallerquarters. They are called Havelies and are beautiful works of art. This particular Havelie had a crafts-shop on the lower level, run by the family who own the Havelie and live on the upper floor.
This is the nanny who was on the second story. She was playing with me. She would pose and I would take some photos, then she would pose again as if the previous episode had not occured. My finger knows a good shot.
Nanny and the children. I am below in the court-yard.
The Republican Day Festivities is celebrated with a dance festival representing each of the 26 states in India. One of my highlights in Delhi was attending this dance festival. The costumes were outstanding. The people from each region looked very much different. The troupe above have strongly oriental, Nepalese features. This group had very different charatceristics.
And this group looked very African. To be politically correct, a la USA, we would call these people Afro-Indians.
