Before I went to India, everyone told me I would see poverty as I have never seen before.   Not true.  The people may be poor, but they are not impoverished.  I have seen much worse poverty in Haiti, and have seen worse slums in Africa.  The only slum I was able to find was in Delhi and when I approached it from the bridge above, I was greeted by many children waving at me.   These are the children.

 

 

And this is the slum that they lived in.

1/5 of the people of the world live in India.  I did not find the number of beggers disproportionate.  This is one in Old Delhi, near the mosque. I did see individuals with physical handicaps much more frequently than in the US.

 

This is one such fellow in Old Delhi and someone is giving him  money.
