A local guide

A sampan on the Shennong

On the return voyage down the Shennong a coffin from the Ba Kingdom (circa 1000 BC) is plainly visible in the cave!! (photo courtesy Ba Times by e-mail).

Along the Yangzi

Xiling Gorge

The Xiling Gorge is 40 miles long. It is the longest and deepest of the gorges, with cliffs that rise to 4000 feet. At its eastern end is the 3 Gorges Dam.

An formidable road along the cliffs of the Xiling Gorge. The road engineering here and elsewhere is quite impressive.

This bridge crosses the Xiling Gorge, then goes through a long tunnel and comes out along the road to the left. The water level will rise to the 175 meter marker that is visible.

Arriving at the Three Gorge Dam. The locks are on the left, toward the right is the expanse of the dam itself. Project very controversial.

We are manouvering to enter the first of a series of 5 locks. Construction almost complete. The hydroelectric guts (generators etc.) still need 3 years work.

The dam will supply about 3% of China's electricity. Its flood protection may be compromised by silt sedimentation.

The locks feel enormous. In actuality, each lock is 30 M (12%) longer than the St Lawrence Seaway but only half as deep and cannot handle ocean freighters

Our cruise ship was one of 4 ships to enter a single lock at the same time. It took about 3 hours to navigate through
